SO WHAT IS A FAITH COMMUNITY NURSE?

A faith community nurse is a Registered Nurse who serves a faith community, sometimes called a parish nurse. There are nurses working in Christian churches of every denomination, in synagogues, temples and mosques. The modern parish nurse model was pioneered by a Lutheran pastor working in Illinois, the Rev. Dr. Granger Westberg.

First and foremost, the parish nurse is a resource. She is an advocate: for better health and for a patient-centered approach to healthcare. She is an educator: answering questions and promoting healthy choices. She is a bridge: helping to link the promise of science with the power of faith.
